The Narrator: Privacy Policy
Effective Date: June 14, 2026
Last Updated: August 22, 2026
Medusa Labs LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”) built The Narrator app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Information We Collect
- Device identifier: A randomly generated ID used to enforce daily narration limits and associate purchases with your device. It is not linked to your Apple ID, email, or name.
- Content you provide: URLs, pasted text, uploaded documents, and images you choose to narrate. We process this content to generate audio.
- Usage data: Anonymous counts of narration requests to enforce free-tier limits and monitor service health.
- Purchase information:handled by Apple App Store. We do not collect or store your payment information.
How We Use Your Information
- To extract article text, generate podcast scripts, and convert text to speech.
- To enforce usage tiers and restore purchases across app reinstalls.
- To improve reliability and fix crashes.
Third-Party Services
We send article text and URLs to the following AI and extraction providers solely to generate narration:
- OpenAI: text-to-speech audio generation, and a moderation check on submitted text
- Anthropic: podcast script and lesson generation
- Moonshot AI (Kimi): an alternative provider for script and lesson generation, used when configured, falling back to Anthropic
- ElevenLabs: text-to-speech fallback when OpenAI is unavailable
- Jina AI / ScrapingBee: web article extraction fallback
Text recognition on photos you scan runs on our own servers. Your photo is processed in memory, is never written to disk, and is never sent to any of the providers above. Only the recognized text is returned to your device.
These providers receive only the content you explicitly submit. We do not sell your data.
Data Retention
- Article text and generated audio: deleted from our servers within 24 hours of the narration being generated.
- Failed generations: an error record is kept for 7 days to diagnose the failure. It contains the error message only, never your content.
- Reading history: for each device we keep a short record of each narration: title, source URL, character count, chosen voice and style, language, and timestamp. It does not include the article text or the audio. We keep the 50 most recent per device and drop older ones automatically. These records currently have no fixed expiry date, and we are working on adding one.
- Usage counts and tier: retained against your random device ID so free limits and purchases survive a reinstall.
- Server logs: we do not log your IP address. Logs record the request path, a masked device identifier, and the user agent. A URL you submit for extraction may appear in these logs.
Your saved library itself lives on your device, not on our servers.
Your Choices
- You can clear the in-app library at any time.
- You can disable camera/photo access in iOS Settings, though document and image narration will not be available.
- You can manage or cancel subscriptions through your Apple ID settings.
Children
The Narrator is rated 17+. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
